Sunwapta Falls

Resort

A cabin in the woods, lots of services

and the famous waterfalls on the property.

Perfect.

Sunwapta Falls Resort is perfectly situated halfway between the Columbia Icefields and the town of Jasper on the Icefield Parkway (Jasper-Banff highway 93) in Jasper National Park. A bungalow style resort, this grouping of “cabins in the woods” combines rustic charm with service. But if that’s not enough, its namesake, the incredible Sunwapta Falls, is only a 5-minute stroll away.

The Falls

The Sunwapta River starts as a trickle of melting water at the Columbia Icefields. Through the year the colour of the water and the falls change. In the heat of the summer, glacial silt, or “rock flour”, give it that spectacular turquoise colour of high country water. In the depths of winter this same stream and falls run crystal clear.

The Stoney Indians are credited with naming the system.
Sunwapta means “Turbulent Waters” in their language. Sounds
about right to us.

Sunwapta Falls
Sunwapta Falls is actually two main falls the first of which is comfortably close to Sunwapta Falls Resort. Several viewpoints, most dramatic of which is the footbridge over the deepest part of the falls, offer safe photo opportunities.

A ten-minute hike down an easy trail will bring you to the lower falls. Every bit as breathtaking as the upper, the lower is visited less frequently because of the extra walking distance. The rewards are well worth the effort. The lower falls provides a glimpse of the remote beauty of Jasper National Park that is often not so easily accessed.

The Service

Any good chef knows the importance of starting a full day
of activity on a proper breakfast.

One of the secrets of success in the restaurant business is to invest in a good chef. The owners of Sunwapta Falls Resort understand this. The dining is the proof. Relax in the Endless Mountain Chain Lounge and sample light fare or move into the main dining room for candle-lit luxury in front of the soul-warming fireplace.

Nightly barbecues are a feature event too.

Lunches on the go can be grabbed in the cafeteria. Ask
and you can have an instant picnic arranged for ahead of
time for pick-up before you go for a day of exploring.

Gift Shop

Over the years they have learned that visitors especially
look for Western Canadian history and Indian crafts
articles. These are offered in a variety of price points.
