Back in 1983, the stone ages of mountain biking, Freewheel Cycle came into existence. Road bikes were king and those new-fangled, fat-tired, mountain bike things were just odd.
While mountain bikes were new, riding off-road was old hat to the boys of Freewheel.
To them, every bike was a mountain bike. It had
to be. That’s where they rode often anyway. From the time
they were little kids, bikes were just the way to get around
in Jasper National Park. One of the partners, Dave McDowell,
lived in a family that didn’t even bother owning a car.
Bikes were just basic transportation. They still are.
Since those days the bikes have evolved. But for the boys of Freewheel, going for a ride is still the best part of every day, summer or winter. They own the shop so they can do just that.
Obviously a shop that has stood the test of time is doing something right. Having nine mechanics on staff indicates a commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Riding daily means they know the products and the people.

The boys not only stay current with the technology by riding lots but they make it possible for you to sample what they live through their retail and rental plans. Their retail options run from entry level up to and including equipment used by competitors of national standing. They even offer bikes built by leading manufacture, Kona, to their own exacting standards. Their regular rental fleet put you onto machines which are 24 speed, performance mountain bikes that have been tuned twice daily.
